I am Althea René Miller.
Artist. Curator. Educator. Advocate. Minister.
My work is rooted in the Gospel; in a theology of the ghetto.
I was born and raised in South Central, Los Angeles, where the graffiti and cracked Earth tell stories of revolution and perseverance; in a city that is synonymous with riot and revival; a city where fire is wild and destructive, an outcry and demand, a baptism and anointing. It is with this spirit that I create.
My art exists at the fault lines, in zones of fracture where truths collide: through geometric shapes that create the control that eluded me as a child; through eyes that communicate what words couldn't; through ears, intricately crafted, pierced and protruding, as if to listen now to what others refused to hear then; through my body moving what's on the page or canvas into the world; through song that carries the weight of experience in sound. The undercurrent of all my work whispers and roars the same demand: Listen.
I am an analytical artist, researching constructs, etymology, history, and Scripture. This systematic approach to creative work isn't a contradiction but a methodology of survival learned by a child who desperately tried to map a reality that kept reconstructing itself around trauma.
Across spoken word, visual art, dance, and song, I excavate the intricacies of stories we've been taught to keep hidden. I create to spur healing, to release what needs to be released, to reveal the powers that be and the power we suppress.
